Stacking peat moss to dry, Connemara, Ireland
In Ireland, peat has been used for centuries to heat homes and fire whiskey distilleries. In a country with little coal, oil, and gas, peat smoke rises from chimneys every day. Tourists like us might find it charming to sit in front of an open fireplace and watch the peat bricks slowly burn away. However, peat is particularly polluting and is responsible for 20% of Ireland’s carbon emissions.
